Antonio Martinez on “Effort to Oust Maduro Derailed as Venezuela Recall Hindered”

“The Venezuelan National Electoral Council has ended the opposition’s hope of a recall referendum this year, and ending any chance for an electoral transition to an opposition-led government before 2019. This will certainly lead to significantly higher social tensions and increase the likelihood of major violent unrest.”

Natalia Duarte on “Chile’s Bachelet proposes pension reforms amid criticism”

“Amid criticism and record-low approval, President Bachelet has proposed reforms to the country’s private pension system, which would require greater contributions from employers to raise current pensions and ensure equity in future pensions. Although Bachelet has had difficulty passing her reform agenda, this measure could significantly raise costs for employers in Chile in the next 10 years.”

Cheng Siew Chua on “Surrender, Duterte tells judges, officials ‘linked’ to drug trade”

“True to his word, Duterte has been relentless in eradicating drugs. He recently exposed 160 people in power suspected of involvement in the drug trade and will likely continue implementing similar policies in the coming months. While his tactics should reduce crime rates in the medium-term, they will give multinationals that are considering investment in the Philippines pause in the short-term.”
