Cheng Siew Chua on “Philippines to suspend 20 more mines, boosting nickel price”

“As the world’s top supplier of nickel ore, the Philippines’ anti-mining stance over environmental concerns will cut global nickel supplies, and could potentially end the country’s nickel mining industry. The crackdown brings into question the predictability of business and regulatory policies under the new government as previously mining practices were not placed under such scrutiny by the state.”

Mark McNamee on “Deutsche Bank’s plunge weighs heavily on European markets”

“While Deutsche Bank’s weaknesses are known and concerning, the bank performed better than expected in recent stress tests and has enough assets to protect itself in order to avoid a crisis situation. Still, the bank’s struggles are indicative of the weak sentiment in Europe and pose a threat of spillover into other weaker banks, which is in turn holding back investment and growth.”
